Boot Or Start Computer Faster

Many computers take a lot of time to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons.

Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:

1. Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.

Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC. It is these that slow down the boot up process.
                                 So uncheck all the unwanted items like ms-office, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup). Don't uncheck your antivirus software.

Restart your Pc to and see for yourself, your pc will now boot faster....

2. A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled, but on some systems it is not, so below is the information on how to turn it on:

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in regedit then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to Y .
Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself.

3.SPEED UP BOOT BY DISABLING UNUSED PORTS.!!
You may have tried many tweaks like modifying windows XP start-up applications, prefetches, unload DLLs method, etc. And yes those methods do work for me.
                    I have just accidentally found out another way to give you an extra boost in windows XP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in Device Manager. for example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to one of your USB's or COM ports, disabling them will give you an extra performance boost in booting. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> device manager Disable devices that you don't use for your PC and then restart.

Top Tips to increase bittorent download Speed

The latest file sharing protocol bittorrent has modified everything when it comes to file sharing. It is a nice platform for downloading large files. Sharing of files include movies, iso images and MP3 songs. Bittorent is mainly famous for illegal file sharing .

The Bittorrent system can be slow at times due to heavy traffic. so let us tweak bittorrent sharing program a little bit.
There are a lot of different bittorrent clients that you can download. I think the best are BitCommet and uTorrent.

Here is a few tips to speed up uTorrent Client. Similar can be implemented on any other torrent clients ,which you are using.

Step 1: Increase TCP connections
You need to increase the number of TCP connections that are allowed at max.Windows XP Service Pack 2 came with the number of allowed open connections to 10. This is to stop any piece of spyware(in our case bittorent client even) from totally taking over your internet connection. TCP connection allowed should be 50 for optimal performance. The best way to increase the maximum number of connections is to apply patch that is available at www.lvllord.de. A nice way to fix this is to download this patch .

The little tweak to the torrent client works great in certain times. If you’re using uTorrent go to Options menu then Preferences. In the Preferences go the Advanced Options. In the advanced options change the net.max_halfopen connections to 80. In the same section change the max half open tcp connections to 80. Once your done click on OK and you are all set. This tweak will let the maximum TCP connection available for the bittorrent client. Now start downloading you’ll realize a little difference in the download speed. Port forwarding technique is more effective than this.

A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).
If there are a lot of daily occurrences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spy ware…

Step 2:Torrent Client Configuration
In order to apply these tips you must know your maximum up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing).
Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.

1. Maximum upload speed
Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.

Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…

80% of your maximum upload speed
so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s But keep seeding!

How to trace email sender’s location

What is an email header?

Each email you receive comes with headers. The headers contain information about the routing of the message and the originating IP address of the message. Not all electronic messeges you receive will allow you to track them back to the originating point and depending on how you send messages determines whether or not they can trace an email address back to you. The headers don’t contain any personal information. At most, the results of the trace with show you the origination IP and the computer name that sent the email. After viewing the trace information, the initiating IP can be looked up to determine from where the message was sent. Remember, IP address location information DOES NOT contain your street name, house number, or phone number. The trace will most likely determine the city and the ISP the sender used.
How to enable email headers?
This process will vary on different email messaging programs that you may be using. I will cover some of the most common options here.
  1. Outlook: Right click the message while it’s in the inbox and choose Message Options. A window will open with the headers in the bottom of the window.
  2. Gmail: Once Logged into your Gmail Account open the Email whose headers you want to view. Click on the “More Options” link in the message next to the date of the email.  Now click the “Show Original” link.  This link will popup a new window the headers and the body of the message.
  3. Hotmail: Click on the “Options” link in the upper navigation bar. Now click on the “Mail Display Settings” link. Change the “Message Headers” option to “Full” and click Ok. Go to your inbox and open any one of your email. You emails show now contain additional headers.
  4. Yahoo: Click on the “Options” link in the upper navigation bar. Now click on the “General Preferences” link. In the paragraph titled Messages and locate the “Headers” heading and select “All”. Go to your inbox and open any one of your email. You emails show now contain additional headers.
In any case, email headers typically look something like this:
Return-Path:
Delivered-To: admin@freetipsandtricks.com
Received: (qmail 13384 invoked by uid 110); 13 May 2005 21:33:53 -0000

X-Originating-Email: [xyz@hotmail.com]
X-Sender: xyz@hotmail.com
From: “Leo Notenboom”
To:  admin@freetipsandtricks.com
Bcc:
Subject: Example Email
Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 14:33:52 -0700
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed
X-OriginalArrivalTime: 13 May 2005 21:33:53.0097 (UTC) FILETIME=[75980390:01C55803]
Your email header may look a lot different. It may be longer or shorter, or have additional information, or less. But the basic idea is that there’s a lot of information in the headers that has to do with the administration of getting the email from the sender to the receiver.

The easiest way for finding the original sender is by looking for the X-Originating-IP header, this header is important since it tells you the IP Address of the computer that had sent the email. If you can not find the X-Originating-IP header then you will have to shift through the Received headers to find the sender’s ip. Once you know the IP address of the sender, you can lookup the location using free service at ip2location.com.

7 Cool Facebook Tips and Tricks

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites people of all ages are addicted to these days. It has more than 500 million active users and more than 50% of the active users log in to their account in any given day.

If you use Facebook on daily basis or occasionally, chances are you’re already familiar with regular stuffs like add/delete friends, status update, walls and profile, add and explore pages & applications, etc, but there may be more features you don’t know about. Here are few cool Facebook tips and tricks you might not know.
  1. Hide Status Updates From Selected People
    You can select specific friend lists to see your status or even individual people by name. To take advantage of these options, click the padlock icon just below your “what’s on your mind” box on your wall and a drop down menu should appear. Selecting “Customize” will bring up more options such as “make this visible to” and “hide from”. You can make your selection as your default setting.
  2. Appear Offline to Selected Friends
    Go to Chat found at the lower right side of the page and then, click on Friends List. A small window will appear where you can type and create a new list. You could name it anything you want. In this example I named it “Blocklist”. On your newly created list, select and start dragging those names that you wish to block. Then set your status to appear offline to this particular group of friends. With this, you now appear completely invisible to them.
  3. Add a Dislike Option to Your Status Update
    “Like” buttons are everywhere on Facebook, and they’re everywhere on the web. But what if you want to update your status or share something that your friends can “dislike?” We know, your friends can choose to “comment” on your post, but where’s the fun in that? The clever Status Magic Facebook app can add a dislike button to any status updates posted via the app. And if you wanted to really mix it up you can actually customize the second emotion to anything, such as “love,” “hate,” “disagree” or even “LOLs.”
  4. Download Facebook Photo Albums
    FacePAD: Facebook Photo Album Downloader allows you to download your friends’ facebook albums, Events albums, and Group Albums with a single click of  button.
  5. Update Facebook Without Using Facebook
    Hellotxt: You can update your status without using Facebook website. Hellotxt allows you to post your status update to most of the social networking sites including facebook.
  6. Create a Photo Collage Using Pictures of Your Facebook Friends
    Click on Friends tab. Proceed to More tab. From “Choose an option” dropdown, choose any of the dashes “—” . Your Facebook friends collage is right on your computer screen.
  7. Share Flickr Photos To Facebook Flickr2Facebook is an unofficial Flickr to Facebook uploader(bookmarklet) which allows you upload photos to Facebook from Flickr.

6 Easy steps to install WordPress on Dreamhost

This is an easy step-by-step tutorial on how to install WordPress on Dreamhost. I have compiled the entire process into six easy steps.
  1. Login to your Dreamhost control panel using your user name and password. Click on Free Website software.

  2. You will see three options for installing/upgrading/removing software in dreamhost. The first option is the “Easy Mode” which doesn’t provide access to the files for installation and you may not be able  the themes/plugins/languages etc. So i would recommend the second option.  Click on “Install new website software - Advanced mode”.
  3. There are number of softwares like WordPress,Gallery, ZendCart, Joomla, phpbb, etc. Click on the WordPress option which is the default one.
  4. Select the domain you want to install wordpress (in my case http://www.freetipsandtricks.com). If you want the database to be created automatically, left the checkbox unchanged and click on the Install button. But if you want to create your own database name, user and password, uncheck the second option. Enter the details in respective fields and click “ Install it for me now!” button.
  5. Make sure to delete pages (if you have uploaded,any) from the home directory before you start the installation. It will take less than ten minutes for the installation and after that you will receive a confirmation email with steps to follow. Here is what i received.

  6. Click on the first link and follow this simple screenshots to complete the wordpress installation. Enter the Blog title and Email address. Make sure you check the box which says “Allow my blog to appear in search engines”. Cross check your Email address and click on Install WordPress.
You can also visit http://wordpress.tv/2009/02/09/one-click-self-installation-of-wordpress-with-dreamhost/ for video tutorial.

Tips to Convert YouTube Videos

If you have favorite videos on the web, you can use download software to convert YouTube videos into different formats such as MP4, FLV, 3GP, AVI, DivX and WMV. Depending on the type of download YouTube software you use, you can save the videos on your computer or view them right from your iPod or mobile phones.

MPEG-4, commonly known as MP4, is a format file created to provide DVD quality of audio and video in a very small file size. It is ideal for playing on portable MP4 players like the iPod Video and mobile phones that are equipped with a technology to playback MP4 files.

There are sites on the web that allow you to download YouTube videos and save them in MP4 format. These sites do not require a converter as they use compressed domain transcoder technology to converts FLV to MPEG quickly and with less losses.
On the other hand, you can download a converter software to convert videos from YouTube into different formats like the MP4. Some converters can convert YouTube videos into several formats while a few can convert into one or two file formats.

FLV stands for Flash Live Video and it is the type of video file used by YouTube, Reuters and Google videos. Some converters retain the FLV extension file of the video instead of converting into another format. There are video and audio players that can play FLV files.

The 3GP is a multimedia file created by the Third Generation Partnership Project of 3GPPP used on 3G mobile phones. It can also be used by 2G and 4G mobile phones. With this technology, it is possible to play and view videos from mobile phones and Pods.

The file extension .3GP is a simplified standard of the MP4 designed to reduce the amount of storage required and decrease the bandwidth requirements established to accommodate for mobile phones.

Another file format into which you can convert YouTube videos is the AVI. AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave, and it is a multimedia container format that allows you to playback synchronously audio and video files like the DVD video format.

The AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, and also use the file format extensions created by the Matrox OpenDML group. AVI was creadtMicrosoft in 1992 as a component of its videos for Windows Technology.
DivX files use the media format DMF or DivX Media Format with .divx as its file extension. As a media container format, it is used for the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec. Its features include interactive video menus, multiple subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and multiple video streams.

You can convert YouTube videos into .divx files and have them played on your DivX player, which you can download for free from certain websites. Another option file for you to consider is the wmv.

WMV stands for Windows Media Video. It was originally developed by Microsoft for internet streaming applications as a competitor of RealVideo. If you convert YouTube videos into WMV file, you must have Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, MPlayer, VLC Media player or KMPlayer

SEO Techniques to boost your website

In SEO, link building is one of the most important techniques used by many specialists in their campaigns to increase the volume and quality of visitors coming to their website. Though many have found this technique a pain, particularly because of all its tedious work, it does make up almost 70% of the total success rate in any SEO campaigns.

Link building involves a number of techniques, from link exchange to blogging. Some have become popular, while others have started to decline due to the changing algorithms of search engines, particularly by Google, as well as methods to decrease the effect of spamming, which caused a number of these techniques to become ineffective. Here are some link building techniques used in today’s market.

Blogging

Blogging is one way to get links from. Managing your own blog and allowing people to comment on it and grow allows your website to get more organic or natural links. Organic links are those types of links which naturally grows over time.
This is mostly due to the content in your blog in which many people would likely link to, normally because of its uniqueness or because of its intriguing facts. This link building technique is mostly known in the industry as link baiting.

Blog comments

One of the most widely used form of technique in link building, it involves living links in blogs through its comments. However, many SEO Philippines experts have said that the use of blog comments in link building has steadily declined due to the use of nofollow tag which rendered every links in their comments ineffective to most search engines, particularly with major search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

Forum signature

Using forum signatures to create links is also popular among many of those that loves to engage in forum discussions. Their signatures in forums are one way to create one-way links to their websites, however, this has also become ineffective particularly because many forums today doesn’t allow their signatures to be used as marketing tools for their websites.

Few Interesting HTML5 Features

The next major revision of HTML standard called as HTML5 has been launched recently. It is expected that any upgraded version of a program or software will include new elements and features. In this article I will include a number of new elements and attributes that assists in modern website development.

  1. Video and Audio support: The most notable feature of HTML5 is video playback which was previously dependent on third-party plugins such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight. HTML5 has <video> tag for videos, <image> for images, <audio> for sound and <canvas> tag to describe graphics content.
    <video width=”320″ height=”240″ controls=”controls”>
    <source src=”movie.ogg” />
    </video>
  2. Navigation tag: HTML5 introduces a new tag called <nav> in order to include navigation menu in your website. <nav>
    <a href=”http://www.freetipsandtricks.com/”>Home</a>
    <a href=”http://www.freetipsandtricks.com/about/”>About</a>
    <a href=”http://www.freetipsandtricks.com/contact/”>Contact</a>
    </nav>
  3. Header and Footer Tag: The <header> tag defines an introduction to a document. <header>
    <h1>Welcome to freetipsandtricks.com</h1>
    <p>Some interesting HTML5 Features</p>
    </header>
    The <footer> tag defines the footer of a section or document. Typically contains the name of the author, the date the document was written and/or contact information.
    <footer>Contact me at linkguytaylor@gmail.com </footer>
  4. Figure element: You can use this new <figure> tag to group some elements in HTML5. <figcaption> adds caption to the group of elements. <figure>
    <img src=”newlogo.png” alt=”Logo”>
    <figcaption>
    <p>Our New Company Logo</p>
    </figcaption>
    </figure>
  5. Required attribute: Gone are the days of writing JavaScript validation for a required field in a html form. HTML5 introduces a new required attribute which specifies an input field must be filled before submitting. <input type=”text” name=”user_id” required=”required” />
  6. Email input : In order to validate an email input, HTML5 has input type of email which has in-built validation for email address You can’t 100% rely on this just yet, for obvious reasons. <input type=”email”  name=”user_email” />
  7. Autofocus attribute: If you need to get a input field selected or focused on page load, a new HTML5 attribute named autofocus is very useful option. <input type=”text” name=”user_name”  autofocus=”autofocus” />
  8. Pattern attribute: HTML5 removes the need of writing regular expression validation in a separate JavaScript function. You can simply use pattern attribute to apply regex to an input type.
    <input type=”text”  name=”country_code” pattern=”[A-z]{3}”  title=”Three letter country code” />

How to reduce spam comments on WordPress blog

For beginners like me, it is often difficult to differentiate between genuine blog comment and spam comment. I  receive 15 to 25 new comments each day most of which are spams and it is already difficult for me to manage them. So I googled over this issue and found some very useful solutions which i am going to share with you.

Akismet (Automatic Kismet) plugin : This plugin comes with every WordPress installation and is a trusted plugin for filtering spams from genuine comments. It checks each and every comments,  pingbacks and trackbacks submitted in your blog. In order to activate it, you need an API key, which you can get for free  by simply signing in Akismet.

Re-CAPTCHAplugin: This is another effective method to reduce spam but it might reduce the number of your regular comments because most people find it annoying to enter CAPTCHA for posting comments in a blog. The idea behind Re-CAPTCHAis to display an image with distorted words and ask users to type the word before submitting the comment. This way, spam bots will be prevented to post their comments in your blog.

Mollom: This is one of the largest website spam filtering system which drastically reduces the burden of blog moderation. You can install the Mollom WordPress plugin for free and need to create an account and activate the plugin. Molllom uses Akismet-type spam filtering technique combined with CAPTCHA to check spam comments.

Close comments on older posts: Older posts that receive a good traffic are often the best targets for spammers, so closing comments on older posts  is a good strategy to fight spam comments . Just go to Settings -> Discussions. Click on the Automatically close comments on article older than” check-box and enter the number of days. The disadvantage of this method is that your post might miss some useful comments over long time.

Editing .htaccess file: If you find some IP addresses are constantly sending spam comments in your blog posts, you can block those IPs by editing the .htaccess file. First of all, download the .htaccess file from the root directory of your web server, edit the file by adding the list of black-listed IPs as deny from xx.xxx.xxx.xxx and upload it. <Limit GET POST>
order allow,deny
deny from xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
allow from all
</Limit>

It is highly recommended to backup your .htaccess file before editing. Thanks shoutmeloud for this tip.

Download streaming videos using Firefox extension

I recently found this Firefox extension called DownloadHelper, through which you can download any  video you want. I really like this tool because it can download videos from most of the popular websites like YouTube, MegaVideo, DailyMotion,Myspace, etc. All you need is Mozilla Firefox browser and a Flash Video Player, which you can download for free.

1. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006/ and click on the Add to Firefox button.

2. Click on Install Now button to begin installation.

3. After the installation is completed, it will ask to restart the browser. Click on Restart Firefox button.

4. Now, you will see a DownloadHelper button on the Firefox toolbar. Open the video you want to download and click on the DownloadHelper button, select the video and click Download. You can save the video anywhere in your harddrive.

Open the video with your favourite flv player. Enjoy your video. :)
